Kill Winter Hair: The Styling Arsenal

Winter: Majestic, magical and brutal on your hair. Taming your locks is tough enough without the added challenges of dryness and static. You have things to do, dammit!

No more tears. Cg is here for you. We've rounded up a few of our stylist recommended tundra-proof products to get you through the season.

Bumble&bumble Tonic Lotion
It's like a crisp gin and tonic for your noggin.Tonic's elixir of vitamins and tea tree oil helps smooth distressed hair and refreshes your scalp with tinglies.

Bumble&bumble Super Rich Conditioner
A luxurious and lightly scented conditioner delivers the healing powers of extra protein and moisture. This is a perfect solution for dry or chemically treated hair.

Bumble&bumble Deeep
This reviving leave in masque is to hair as spinach is to Popeye. It packs an extra punch of protien to revive thirsty and damaged hair. I'm talking to you, blondies!

Bumble&bumble Creme de Coco Tropical-Riche Masque
A sexy and generous masque that offers indulgent moisture. We highly recommend this treatment for wild or curly hair. Bonus: It smells good enough to eat. But don't.

 Really.

Stranger Than Fiction

Often we discover that our real lives are stranger than fiction.

The world of hair is no exception.

Technology often skirts the line between ingenious development and torture device. Here are a few of our favorite blasts-from-salons-past oddities that qualify for "Strange But True" gold stars. Is it a hair dryer? Jedi pilot gear? An Elephant Organ? A throne for a space queen?

If these contraptions aren't weird enough for you, check out this retro Hellrasier wackiness.

Looks are Deceiving

Isn't it strange that hair on our heads is beautiful and full of power-- but hair on the wall or between your sheets is fuel for nightmares? That the same strands simply being relocated to the most mundane places shakes us from the routine and into the discomfort of a late night double feature picture show?

Hair on your head: beautiful.
Hair in your burger: poison.
Hair cascading down the stairs: horror.

Jessica Wohl wants to warp your world. The Midwestern artist transforms unassuming places into spooky shifting spaces by manipulating the mundane.  Her recent installations remind us that looks are deceiving, nothing is as it seems and anything could be breathing.

If I had a mustache...

If I had a moustache I would use it to tickle kitten faces,
teach it to bare knuckle box in itty bitty shorts,
and wax it with whisky into aerodynamic points so I'd break the sound barrier.

If I had a moustache I would carry a long skinny sword--
because that's what you do when you have whiskers,
and make walrus faces in the mirror until very late at night.

If I had a moustache I'd karate chop muskies with my bare hands,
build an igloo-animal-rescue-bomb shelter,
and give it a fancy name--

Like Preston. Or Emmanuel.  Or Jimi Hendrix.

If I had a moustache it would be a veracious reader
and be first pick for my Pictionary team,
because I could depend on Jimi to always have my back--

or my face.

Hocus Pocus

Tis the season when the separation between stylish, surreal and spooky is at its thinnest and we are susceptible to strange and compulsive urges to experiment--with our hair.  We are given permission to be unabashedly creative and subversive.

Tease it, spike it, stripe it and reconstruct it. Or braid doll faces in it. This is America.

Let's be honest, disguise is the most desirable part of Halloween, excluding gobs of free candy, inexpensive lingerie and pretending it's NOT the fiftieth time you've cried after watching Hocus Pocus

It's a sad movie. Don't judge us.

How do you plan to incorporate your coif in your Halloween hair fantasy?

Dryspun Finish: No, Get Your Own.

If you've visited this blog in the past, you know I'm an unapologetic Bumble&bumble fan girl.

It's because everything they make is perfect. They can't help it.

Their latest marvel is the Thickening Dryspun Finish: a light weight dry spray that adds oomph without the stickiness of a hairspray.

Admittedly, I was skeptical upon skimming the promotional material. My face twisted up with "I don't know about this", flipping through pages of parted bedroom lips, Bridgette Bordot bouffants and Kate Moss music video hair. It promised a LOT.

I needed to see it to believe it. So, I went under the blow dryer for science!

Before and After.

The moral of the story is that Hair Miracles do come true.

Dryspun Finish delivers fullness and light texture with a demure botanical scent that doesn't overpower. This spray also revamps a second-day style that's losing lift or looking limp due to humidity. It probably makes you smarter too.

The sample bottle is now in my purse.

And no, you can't have it. Get your own here.

Be a Hero: Get The Job

Gentlemen,
You're on the job hunt. Your collar is starched. Your resume is crisp.

You're an American Hero.

Naturally, the employer of your dreams has requested an interview.  Being the go-getter beast you are, you want to look your best and blow their minds.

Here are a few tips to making your first tete-a-tete with your future boss remarkable.

Don't get a haircut the day of your interview. A brand new cut can make you appear over eager. Especially if it's a haircut that doesn't complement your personality. You want to look dynamite not desperate. Plan ahead.

Not too short. Not too long. Shaving your own head in lieu of getting a haircut makes you look insane. As does trying to quaff your long unruly hair into a Trump comb-over. Conservative doesn't necessarily mean boring, it means clean. The goal is to be remembered for your demeanor, not your 'do.

Less is more.  Slimy hair implies overcompensation. (Unless you are applying to be a full time cartoon villain or gelatin dessert.) An easy matte finish exudes confidence. If you have questions about how to properly use product to get the best results, consult your Cg stylist.

A professional badass is always ready for action. Plan ahead and ask your Cg stylist about the Smart and Neat service.

The Worst Haircut I Ever Had

I'd never been to Mall of America. My thirteen-year-old heart was glee-drunk with the thought of miles and miles of scrunchies, indoor roller coasters and a post office. (A post office!)

As a kid who grew up in the burbs, malls were more than Cinn-a-bons and cell phone kiosks. They were hubs of culture and style. Like the port of Ithaca. And this? This was the mother load.

We're going to shop till we die...and pet sting rays.

In the tizzy of pawing through movie posters and novelty sunglasses, we stumbled on a salon.

HAIRCUTS: $10.

Our sugar-fried tween brains were hell bent on becoming total babes and getting haircuts without our parents permission.

This was lawless frontier.

Meanwhile on MTV, this video was on loop. Natalie Imbruglia was pouty, fresh, effortless and Australian.  It was my first hair fantasy--and I imagine every other girl's on the planet at the time.

I imagined casually swiping a bit of sexy fringe away from my face. I would look just like her. I had already bought my stretched out t-shirt. This was totally going to work.

Looking back, I'm not sure where the red flags and blaring sirens were. Between the abnormally low price tag and the obvious language barrier, this was probably illegal.

The stylist kept squinting at me in the mirror holding two fingers up:

"I want two inches taken off here, and cut close in the back."

"Two?"

"Yes, two inches taken off here and close in the back."

"Okay. Two."

After sitting in the chair for twenty minutes half-arguing with the stylist, she pulled out a trimmer with a guard the size of a show shovel. She proceeded to leave two inches of hair on my entire head. So instead of this:

I got this.

Back at the hotel, I locked myself in the bathroom to sulk because my life was over. My best friend tried to reassure me through the door, "It's really not that bad. Okay, it is bad. BUT we're at the Mall of America. You can buy any hat you want."

Do you have a hair horror story?

Dear Milwaukee: A Love Letter

Dear Milwaukee,

We want you to know that you look really nice today.

You've been down on yourself lately, and we won't have it. You're the prettiest princess at the prom.

It's totally okay if you're up in our dance space.

We want to stroll with your hotness in our arms along the beach and watch the sunset. You probably smell really good too.  After our seaside walk, we'd buy your hotness a drink with one of those little umbrellas--

A pink one.

Because you're worth it.

Milwaukee, we're writing in our diaries about you. We're thrilled you walked by. We hear songs on the radio and think of you. We're Smitten.

It should be someone's full time job to stake out on your roof and scream BABE ALERT every time you leave the house and grace the street.

Because really, we might not be ready for this jelly.

Your Not-So-Secret Admirer,

The Dreamtime: Inspiration

Braids are a beautiful achievement on their own, so you can imagine our glee when we discovered these hypnotizing works on paper by So Yoon Lym.

The Dreamtime series draws inspiration from aboriginal myths of creation, undulating landscapes and chronicles the journeys of both the braider and wearer.

We are particularly appreciative of the subtle movement and meditative detail of the images.

CG TV reports live from the Whitefish Bay July 4th Parade!

Cutting Group had a blast this year celebrating Independence Day with all our neighborhood friends at Whitefish Bay's annual July 4th Parade.  CG brought the heat to this year's parade with the CG Kazoo Band, balloons, games, prizes, and our very own master or ceremonies Elvis Presley!  It was a huge hit, and we can't thank enough all those that marched with us, and those that attended to make this year's parade such a success.

For all the highlights and special appearances, CUTTING GROUP TV was on the scene reporting from the crowd with interviews and more.  Check out the video below featuring CUTTING GROUP TV'S news correspondant, Kitty Lockhart, and her in-depth look at the day's parade fashion, hair, and happenings...

We'll be back again for next year's parade and we can't wait to bring you all new entertainment and surprises!

Chelsea Girls: Subversion Style

In the wake of the Met Gala, the New Yorker's recent (embarrassing) "How Punk Are You" quiz and the prevalence of post-apocalyptic imagery, we can confidently say that in style conversation Punk is having a Moment.

Great minds are debating the historical and cultural implications of the political and artistic revolution, and critics and participants alike deliberate whether the sub culture has come full circle or faces extinction.

The Cutting Group conclusion: we appreciate creativity, past and present. Dead or not, it looks AWESOME.

The 'punk discussion' inspired us to revisit one of the most iconic and controversial counter-culture cuts: The Chelsea.

There are several variations on this style, but is most easily defined by one area of the scalp (either the crown or the nape) being cut close while the remaining pieces around the ears or base of the neck are left long.

Bangs often survive this procedure.

The cut made its debut with mods in the English underground during the 1960's. Due to economic shifts, an insurgence of disposable income for youths lead to the rabid consumption of  music and American fashions. THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD.

The style was later adopted by punks in the early 1970's and reinterpreted during the hardcore revival of the 80's. The Chelsea has chameleoned throughout the decades and because of its incredible texture and enticing rebellious implications, reincarnations of the cut still surface in the fashion sphere today.

Still subversive. Still striking. Still making a statement.

From hooligan street gangs to the pages of Vogue, the Chelsea is a survivor.

Slow Immersion

Winnie Truong's latest show, Slow Immersion  is a surreal collection of dreamy tresses. The Toronto artist explores our relationship with hair beyond aesthetic beauty, but as a meditation on  expression, personality and security.

Curls, waves and braids entwine with portraits and body parts to create fantasies that are both winsome and unsettling.

These drawings could be the ethereal fairytale princess--

or the thing that eats the princess.

Truongs exhibition is currently on display at Mulherin + Pollard NYC

Inspiration: The Power Mane

The CG goes in depth with Milwaukee rocker, Maxwell Emmet (guitar shredder of Revolush and Tigernite) to reveal the secrets of his stand out style and sage advice for achieving a righteous power mane.

How long have you and your hair known each other?

Pretty much all of my life. There's that awkward middle period when  you don't talk to each other but after that, it's been a pretty solid brothership.

What's the best part about having long hair?

Girls love to ask me about it and touch it—tell me they're jealous of my curls. It requires no talent on my part. Random people talking to you and touching you...and of course head banging ability.

Does having awesome hair make you a better guitar player?

Absolutely. I think the correlation between hair length and ability to rock has been proven throughout rock history.

Is it possible that your hair has any super powers?

I haven't noticed any yet. However, I think we'd have to cut it to find out. It's possible-- If I cut it, I'd fear spiraling into depression...

Do you have any words of wisdom for other power mane seekers on their journey?

For the fellas I'd say, getting past that awkward medium length where you have doubts and cut it off, you'll never reaching your full mane potential.

The moral of the story is to never give up?

Never give up.

That's beautiful.

Pro Tip: Investing in a good conditioner and pony-holders, as well as the Will to Succeed are essential to cultivating a worthy power mane.

No Party Like a Gatsby Party

Baz Luhrman's sparkling adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's decadent and foreboding novel, The Great Gatsby has been making waves with designers as well as stylists.  Clean and crisp is in this summer!

Carey Mulligan as Daisy is pixie perfect in an elegantly accessorized bob.

Historically, the Bob was shock-rocking. It signified a new expressive wave of freedom and made a statement about the women who boldly wore it. The cut made its mass media debut in 1920 via the Saturday Evening Post with its infamous article, “Bernice Bobs Her Hair”.

Madness (and hotness) ensued.

DiCaprio as Gatsby sporting a smooth close cut with just enough length to keep it romantic.

In the new decade, gentlemen departed from slicked back single length cuts and transitioned into dramatic parts, Marcel waves and sexy smooth fades.

Pair it with a glass of champagne?
Perfection.

DO NOT EAT: Bumble and Bumble Thickening Crème Contour

Crème Contour is the latest brainchild of the B&B Thickening line. I decided to get my hands dirty for hair science and see if I could achieve the bodacious and lived-in look that the product boasts.

I am PICKY about pommade. My hair is exceptionally processed, and because of it's dry texture the waxiness of pommade often achieves a less than glamorous finish and more of an product dread-lock.

My freshly blow dried mess: the result of David Lynch mating with a bag of cotton candy.

With the consistency of soft butter and light tea tree scent, it took serious will power not to eat the Crème. The botanical bouquet that isn't blatantly flowery or overpowering, making it ideal for ladies and gents.

I melted a nickel sized dollop on my fingers and worked it through blow dried hair, focusing on the sections that I wanted to de-friz and define.

From baby bird fuzz to luxe pompadour! Hair miracles happen every day...

A  little goes a long way, but adding additional layers delineated the curls without making the hair heavy or greasy. (To achieve this look I paired the Thickening Crème Contour with B&B Surf Spray for a little grit and oomph.) The Crème remains soft and shiny as it sets leaving locks looking full and nourished.

Bonus: As someone with color treated hair who doesn't wash their mop daily, this product wears well over time.  No dingy day-after dust or stickiness.  (Pro Tip: Pair this product with the B&B Thickening Mousse for some serious photo shoot fantasy hair!)
